Sony has completely ceased shipping PS3 inventory to retailers, even ordering the removal of dummy display units; final orders cease in a few days.
The reason given is “maker circumstances.” Below is their letter to 7-11, leaked via 2ch…

There can be little doubt that Sony is clearing its supply chain in anticipation of a new lineup, which will presumably incorporate the rumoured and nearly orderable (http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2009/08/01/ps3-slim-appears-on-amazon/) PS3 Slim, and presumably an updated base unit (as it seems unlikely the Slim would support much in the way of a price cut).
