The dread Red Ring of Death has long been a feature of Xbox 360 ownership, but a recent survey reveals the shocking truth: the console boasts a failure rate of 54.2%, compared to 10.6% for the PS3 and 6.8% for the Wii.
Microsoft of course never releases statistics on its returns rate, so it has taken a third party survey to uncover the apparent rate. In this case, rag Game Informer surveyed 5,000 readers, asking them about the failure rates of the consoles they owned.
Microsoft’s notorious customer support and warranty system (the subject of a class action lawsuit which forced them to extend Xbox 360 warranties) also come in for criticism: the average turnaround for one of the broken consoles was nearly a month, whilst Nintendo and Sony managed a week. Satisfaction with Microsoft’s support was also a good deal less than with the others.
However, Microsoft’s blasé attitude to the pathetic reliability of its console appears justified: only 3.8% of Xbox 360 owners would never buy another Xbox because of failure.

Funny, my XBOX 360 i had just died of this issue. Seriously, just like the other night. However I think it easy fixed, will probably do it myself this weekend. Can't be blowed sending it back to Microsoft

I smell a conspiracy I reckon you guys are responsible for this. Never had any problems with the thing until i heard about. I get the serious resentment to XBOX 360 arounds here. Even after this I still prefer the console to the over priced PS3.

My understanding is a lot of it caused by the CPU and overheating. And that it can be fixed fairly simply if your game enough to open the console. Which personally I am looking more than forward to. I highly doubt it really has a 54% failure rate and would also doubt the validity of the survey and the impartiality of the journalist(s) (if you could call them that). The only people respond to survey are people with strong views one way or the other. It would prehaps be better if microsoft just released the numbers them selfs. Anyway I will see how the self repairs go. :)

The RROD issue has been around since the 360 came out. It's nothing new Aria..... And if it was a conspiracy, those of us in the anti-xbox legion, would do much worse. :p

lol, We're only messing Aria. But I've had a 360 and through it was an alright machine, I preferred the PS3.

Maybe it just down here in Aus, but there hardly any games that inspire me to play the PS3. Then the one we got (we got it for free with out TV) isn't backwards compatible with PS2 games only PS1. I mean wth @_t. I only ever had a PS2 and not a PS1, so it kind of frustrating. And then for some god knows reason the most frustrating thing was, that the cable for the controller to charge it, was soooooooooo short. I know you could probably by new ones or whatever but I hate to fork out money for something like that and it the most annoying thing. I thrash controllers and the charge in wireless never last long enough. So I need a cable quite a bit of the time. And I hardly ever sit close enough for the consle for it to be effective. I mean sometimes I play the game laying upside down on the sofa, just cause it comfortable. Then there was forking out 100 bucks for the gold something arather HD cable to make use of the bluray graphics. URGH Oh well. *Now I have 2 horrible systems.

A dead XBOX 360 and a PS3 witha short cable. MY LIFE IS MEANINGLESS

Short lead? Well, any USB 2.0 plug A to plug mini B will work with the PS3. I have a Tomtom satnav USB 2.0 lead and it's much longer. I know what you are saying though, but if you only use one controller at a time you can use one while the other is charging and vice versa.

My understanding of the PS3 when it came out was this; I was not going to buy a PS3 because of lack of games. However they have seemed to get the ball rolling now so I bought one. Back in the day the XBOX 360 could only achieve 1080i, the PS3 has Blu-ray and can play Blu-ray movies and games, however! The XBOX360 has a removeable DVD drive which is good, but I'm still liking that Blu-ray. The PS3 CPU is more powerful, but the XBOX360's GPU is more powerful, pro's and con's.
More importantly it is told by XBOX360 users and developers alike that; Your RROD is NOT a threat but an inevitability.
This is serious for me as my room in the summer with the window open is 25C - 32C I can't afford to have my tech die on me.

XBOX360 games can be pirated. Which IS good if you havent got much money which for some kids is like a "pacifier" or dummy that keep them quiet! PS3 has not been figured out yet. Hence it is the 'why' I haven't got more games! >.<

Having said that my choice is still PS3. I have had a PS1, PS2 (chipped) and PS3 and they have been great, reliable and innovative for me. I prefer the PS3 not the XBOX's timebomb. If they get the failure rates right down I will consider getting one, but in all honesty they are selling despite this and that comes down to cost. (9.15 million XBOX's - 3.25 million PS3) < Last I checked.
I am happy with my PS3.

OMG short lead and none longer around what ever shall I do? hmm....oh I dunno >.> maybe plug it into laptop or PC when PS3 aint on? :p
and 360 = MS piece of crap.....why it's selling better? the games and lower price. and while people BAW bout PS3 not having full BC, well NEWSFLASH, neither does the 360 >.>

WELL.... The survey done by "Game Informer's print edition"

Reports the XBOX360 failure rate to be 54.2%; this was taken from 5000 people, which isn't exactly reliable data considering the are 9.15 million XBOX360's out there. While these figures are troubling I don't think they are accurate, however this does not let the XBOX360 off the hook.
XBOX360 is the MOST played console in the world out of PS3 and the Wii, but this console also had a headstart over the PS3; they have been selling for roughly a year while PS3 was ironing out the gremlins.
This is not the first time MS has rushed out a product to start gaining capitial and market share; Vista, MS 2000 ME (Mistake Edition by users) Internet Explorer 2001, Soapbox (Youtube rival) ect...

On topic: At the moment, I don't think anything as problematic as the XBOX360 should EVER have been released, take the 2009 BBC Watchdog 'disk scratching'.
Any 'household' vibration e.g Hoovering, knocking the TV stand, having a fat mate LOL CAN scratch your disks. Microsoft stated that it "makes clear with multiple warnings not to move the console with the disc inside." WTF? So it's YOUR fault! Whatever!

XBOX live = £40/yr & buy stuff optional
PSN = Free & buy stuff optional
My choice is buy the PS3. It is simply better made and that is a FACT.
But if you REALLY want a XBOX360 now, which a lot of you will anyway according the 3.8% who obviously don't care... then you NEED warranties galore; 3 year, limited disc replacement scheme ect...
Until the failure rate is under 10% I'm not going anywhere near and FYI Microsoft state the failure rate is 3-5 percent just months after the launch... they have not since commented. That speaks volumes and it is such a shame as it could have beaten PS3.

360 beat the PS3? no way....face it, had MS waited to work out the kinks, there wouldnt be as many games out. PS3 and 360 would have bout same ammount of top notch games killing the 360's current edge (an edge it is currently losing as more games come out for PS3). and without it's selling edge, PS3 exclusives would've more than likely stayed exclusive hurting 360 even more.
I'm just waiting for RRoD to evolve into total system meltdown maybe then those who dont care bout the RRoD will rethink their stand :p

The PS3 is NOT an XBOX360 KILLER. The XBOX360 will die on it's own accord it seems. The more I research this, the more I feel like bashing it. ANY FOOL can put together a lump of hardware and expect it to work, but if it's parts do not work together both physically and literally for a short amount of time then it is a waste of money and effort. I can't believe the amount of people getting another XBOX360 while they have been through three of them already. Most serious gamers get through four of them in 2 years! Why do these XBOX loyal idiots go through 4 of them before going "Oh well it died. Better get the same piece of trash again..." The XBOX360 is crap but with good specs THE END.
Wii's and PS3's don't die a fraction as much. HELL MY NES IS OLDER THAN SOME OF YOU MEMBERS @ 22 YEARS OLD AND STILL RUNNING AND DOING THE JOB IT WAS DESIGNED FOR!
So please, would you buy a car or phone on the bases that 50% will die after a short period of it's life? If my NES, SNES, N64, PS1, PS2(chipped), PS3 have all lived since their production date, then the XBOX should do the same.
NO EXCUSES for this consumer nightmare. Too bad most of the target market are kids that couldn't care less about previous console marvels of reliability, money, spin, corporations and MS ect...

IGNORE THIS POST - it really is mindless and you are more then likely going to disagree with it

[mindless rant]

I read through the supposed arguments. I think it funny that one person posted liking the 360 and you guys manage multiple posts arguing with yourselves/ I love forums and being the on person to disagree.

It clear that majority of the user here are sony fans, but I not suprised, every forum based around anime forums is exactly the same. Sony is loved and Microsoft is hated.

Firstly actually, there are articles discussing the fact the problem has been theoretically ammended. The manufactoring of new XBOX360 should be devoid of the problem. The issue of the CPU detatching from the motherboard when excessive heat occur that is. But I guess you never know until it happens. But that the other funny thing. People saying oh my PS3 hasn't broken yet hence it better XBOX360. My XBOX 360 only broke recently and the PS3 hasn't even been out for even as close as long. So you never know. Actually I do know of atleast 2 cases of of friends of mine who had PS3 problems, one had a dodgy mother board, he waiting for a replacement from Sony 11 weeks now. And the other one faulty drive, taht works about 50% of the time. Maybe microsoft are just more consistent in it breaking. But hey I sure I could find user who XBOX360 hasnt' broke.

But on some of the points, actually the XBOX360 does have BC with most of it games, just a matter of getting the updates which are easily solved.

As for specs, yeah looking ath them PS3 has the advantage but in about 90% of the time the specs are very rarely ever fully utalised. It a console people and console specs become outdated before they are even realeased. If all you care about is specs then buy a PC, atleast you can upgrade it, you can better control the graphics to speed ratio, patches are more available. But hey didn't the orginal XBOX have better specs then the PS2 last time, it came out later as well, easier to mod. it funny how the situation turned a now the arguments have swapped over between the groups.

I also prefer the XBOX 360 cause it easier to mode, it basically a PC under the hood. Break down I can easily pull it apart strap parts to it etc. Prehaps PS3 may be like that, who knows.

You guys talk about the edge, new flash people a console is it game and it price not other way around. A console is just a pretty box with flashing lights without games. Take all the failed console, they generally are good systems just never had the games developed for. What was it the PS1 vs the sega Saturn or whateve it was called. Sony wipped out a quick, dirty and dodgy system which supported "psuedo" 3D graphics, and got some companies to bust out a whole series of games. That what won it the war initially. Speed and games. Exclusive games are going at the wayside as well. As mentioned earlier game companies don't give a hell care about what system, they will butcher games for both system if they think it will make them a market share. It paramount to going only to the same cinema because you enjoyed movie there once. Some titles are only XBOX360, some are only good on PS3, some are only good on WII. And that may even include games across all 3 consoles.

You say "as more games come out for the PS3" WTH, you think the XBOX360 going to stop game production. Both system will have games developed for it for a while yet, so PS3 still got a while to catch up yet. But I don't care, IT NOT THE QUANTITY OF THE GAMES, it the quality. I mean when XBOX360 first came out down here, was the same day oblivion was launched. I got it both for PC and XBOX360, but the expeirence of loading up the 360, with Oblivion on the 80 inch TV at 12:30 am was just mind blowing. Sensational. It wasn't the console, it was the game experience and sitting at a PC wouldn't of given me that. Never had that experience with the PS3, when it was released here there was no good games. Maybe once they release a good 80+ hour RPG down here for it I might agree with you guys, but alas we are yet to recieve that down here in Aus. It just so far I have found better titles on 360, either because they came out before the PS3 or they were never on it. And call me cheap but I do like cheaper games. Hardcore Sony user ar probably richer then me.

Anyway all this is beside the point.

In the end I don't care about the console too much. It a box that plays games, nothing more nothing less. If I want to chat with people I would use the phone, if I wanta fax modem coffee dispensor stapler, I would buy one of those myself, don't care if the Console can do it for me. For me the main thing is the GAMES EXPERIENCE. Doesn't matter to me if there is one extra pixel per image, or that supposedly the image is better (though I can't deterime it is), hey I grew up with pixel graphics what do you expect and hell i still play them (better then some games nowdays). When I buy a game I don't care about the system, If it on multiple systems I will buy according to price, as it will allow me to buy more games later on. If the graphics were better on the more expansive one woopdy doo, I not going to know cause I only going to buy a game once. Ohhh their more unlockable sexy school girls on this version, WHO cares, unless it story line related don't give a care. I play to have fun, currently the 360 given me more gaming enjoyment and more fun games, either because they came out first or just not on the PS3. Who knows in a few months a whole series of games come out that mean I only playing the PS3. In that case GREAT, power to it, but I sure as hell won't be playing them casue the PS3 is a Sony, or that it has free internet or integrated bluray laser cannons or whatever.

You guys can stick to one brand of console for all I care and go to sleep hugging your PS3, though be careful it gives electrical burns. The best console is decided at the end not before. It a retrospective thing.

I finish with one last parting shot, more cause I love to be annoying. Computers are way better then all 3 of the systems, consoles are for kids. (I am the biggest kid of the lot).

Man that felt good. [\mindless rant]

If you got to here, and read everything above. SHAME ON YOU, you should know it was nothing important.
