Also at Viz Cinema's "Yōkai U.": Ukiyo-e woodblock art, Matt Alt's Yōkai lecture
San Francisco's New People World cultural entertainment center will be hosting (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/press-release/2009-10-15/new-people-yokai-event-celebrates-halloween-japanese-style) a free "Yōkai University San Francisco Campus" exhibition (http://www.newpeopleworld.com/upcoming-events/halloween-special-exhibition-yokai-university-sf-campus/) at its Viz Cinema lobby from October 23 to November 6. The event will celebrate different aspects of yōkai, the Japanese word for mythical spirits. Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints by artist Hokusai Katsushika and yōkai artwork by GeGeGe no Kitarō (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=1331) creator Shigeru Mizuki (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=5623) will be on display.
Matt Alt, the co-author of Hello, Please! Very Helpful Super Kawaii (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/lexicon.php?id=8) Characters from Japan and Super #1 Robot: Japanese Robot Toys, 1972-1982, will be presenting a free lecture on yōkai on October 31 at 1:00 p.m. Last October, Alt and Hiroko Yoda published Yōkai Attack!: The Japanese Monster Survival Guide, a book which is billed as "the first-ever English language yōkai guidebook."
