... turns out I had a couple of RAM cards with mismatched speeds. D'oh. Now my Sempron tower will go to the Compaq logo screen, but there it pauses indefinitely and proceeds to mimic an ancient NES cart that is in dire need of cleaning. I suspect the fault lies within the as-yet unidentified motherboard.

... it also turns out that the glitchy logo screen was the result of outdated/incorrect/missing drivers. PC's back from the shop and functioning perfectly now, except for the fact that I'm running on VGA controllers only. Seems my onboard video drivers are missing as well, and I can't use my GeForce 8400GS video card. That could either be because a) I'm currently running 32-bit XP Home and require a 64-bit version of Windows (as the video card is 64-bit), or b) the PCIExpress slot could be a different speed than the video card. It may even be both. I will have to investigate further.

I had to take it to the shop, since I didn't have a copy of Windows laying around. I do now, though... cracked XP Pro x64, but unauthenticated. :(
